Employee Volunteer Initiatives—Programs & Actions

ACTION
ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighborhoods) is an Alcoa employee engagement program managed by Alcoa Foundation. The program encourages teams of five or more Alcoa employees to spend a minimum of four hours on a community service project for a local nonprofit organization or NGO. As recognition of their efforts, Alcoa will make either a US$1,500 or a US$3,000 unrestricted grant (depending on the size of the team) to the organization.

In 2007, 8,309 employees provided 39,486 hours of community service through the ACTION program, earning the organizations they served nearly US$1.6 million in grants.

Bravo!
The Bravo! program recognizes the volunteer efforts of individual Alcoa employees in their communities. For each Alcoa employee who volunteers at least 50 hours at a nonprofit or NGO, a yearly US$250 grant is awarded to that organization.

Qualifying organizations include nonprofit civic, health, social welfare, educational, cultural, community, or governmental organizations that provide a charitable service.

In 2007, Alcoa provided nearly US$2.2 million in Bravo! grants to recognize 594,432 employee volunteer hours by 8,498 Bravo! volunteers.

Combined, the 2007 ACTION and Bravo! programs involved 9,040 grants totaling nearly US$3.8 million to organizations in 28 countries, representing nearly 634,000 hours of volunteering in communities.

Month of Service
Alcoa's annual Worldwide Month of Service is a company-wide event that recognizes and encourages the efforts of the thousands of Alcoa employees who volunteer in their communities around the world. It serves as a unified timeframe for all at Alcoa to work in teams and individually to help nonprofit and non-governmental organizations with their efforts to improve the quality of life in communities in which Alcoa operates worldwide. Matching this employee volunteer time with Alcoa grants extends the value of Alcoa's and Alcoa Foundation's community investments and builds strong engagement with the communities where Alcoa is located.

More than 17,000 Alcoa employees from 36 countries and more than 200 communities volunteered their time as part of the October 2007 Month of Service. The Month of Service has raised the profile of Alcoa's volunteers and volunteering efforts around the world, with more than 47,160 employees, family members, contractors, and community members participating in 2007 events.

Under the theme of "Alcoa in the Community," participation in 2007 was up nearly one third from 2006. Alcoa's senior management was actively involved in many of the more than 780 events held in 36 countries in 200 communities.

Alcoa employee volunteers partnered with local nonprofit organizations, neighbors, government officials, and family members to make maximum impact in their local communities. Volunteer efforts included service to nearly 37,000 community residents, planting of more than 12,000 trees, and direct assistance to nearly 200 schools. Many events were held with NGOs where Alcoa employees volunteer year-round and where Alcoa Foundation grants complement their efforts.
