Baie-Comeau Celebrates 50 Years
Alcoa’s Baie-Comeau smelter, in Quebec, Canada, continued its 50th anniversary celebration—which began with a special flag-raising ceremony on June 25—with a weekend of activities recently including visits from government and Alcoa leaders, community tours, a dinner for more than 3,500 current and past employees and their guests, and a community-wide concert and fireworks.

An aluminum and stone sculpture named "The Faces of Time," created by Mechanical Draftsperson Doris Clavette in honor of all employees who have worked at the smelter is now on display at the plant's entrance. "On behalf of Alcoa, a word of thanks to the community of Baie-Comeau for allowing us to be part of you and to be what we are today. We want Alcoa to continue to be part of your future," said Klaus Kleinfeld, Alcoa’s newly-appointed president and chief operating officer, congratulating the employees on their accomplishments. The second largest aluminum smelter in North America, Baie-Comeau’s annual production capacity is 437,000 mt of aluminum.
